Awareness Post: Yoshitomo Nara

Nara is a Japanese artist whose works use cartoony, stylized children to show darker adult themes. His work first gained major attention during Japan's Pop Art movement in the 1990s, and his work has grown in popularity since then. Nara's unusual mix of innocent, child-like subjects and violent themes are a societal commentary on how life in an adult world affects children.
Overall, I like Nara's work. I like that Nara has a really distinct style. Even over the course of about 20 years, his work is still super recognizable. He's been able to explore a simple theme in many different ways, but all of it feels cohesive. I admire his ability to make his characters expressive without sacrificing their simplicity. Honestly, his work reminds me a lot of Javier Calleja's work (I did an awareness post on him around the same time last year). I also really like his color choices,
Nara does exactly what I want to do: use lighthearted imagery to expose a societal problem. Even though his work is cartoon-inspired, it adds to his theme instead of detracting from it, which I'm struggling to accomplish in my own work.
