Experience Post: Oura Sananikone

At today's Lunchtime Lecture, I learned a lot about how Sananikone's inspirations and processes in his artwork. I was really impressed with his mastery of tons of different media and his ability to preserve his distinct style. I think it's really interesting that he approaches his artwork (mainly his comics) like a dumping ground for any cool idea he has. I think that's a really cool way for his audience to learn about the type of person he is, and it helps him avoid my issue of not having enough funny ideas to create artwork. I also thought it was interesting how invested he is in the Richmond art community. He talked a lot about the events he visited and the projects he worked on that contribute to Richmond's art scene, and it's pretty cool to learn that my hometown has such a thriving art community.


Sananikone mentioned that he had his formal training in painting, so I'm curious how he went from that traditional background to his graffiti comic-inspired style and his comics and toys. I'm also curious how he balances his many different projects.
