Q3 Reflection

I feel like during Q3, I really hit my stride with what kind of art I wanted to make.
Coach Hall suggested I try making comics near the end of Q2. Originally, I didn't know whether I'd like making comics or not. I was pretty disappointed that I wouldn't get to work in alcohol markers, and I was worried that I wouldn't come up with enough funny ideas. But after a whole quarter of making comics, I've found that, as usual, Coach Hall was right. Making comics feels relaxed, rewarding, and stays interesting.
One of my longstanding gripes with making art was that thinking of ideas was always super fun, but actually making the art felt like a chore. Making comics alleviates that struggle because creating simple, funny, drawable ideas is an entertaining mental challenge, and actually making the comics is a really fast and satisfying process.
I'd already settled on a funny art style from earlier projects, so over Q3, my main challenge was actually telling funny jokes. I wanted to combine my funny visuals with funny concepts. Originally, I didn't think it would be too difficult, but upon further inspection, I realized that being funny is hard. Some jokes don't always land right, some are too complicated for a one-panel comic, and it always seems like the best ideas have already been taken. With some practice, and Even with those challenges though, I still find making comics to be really fun and rewarding.
Looking ahead to Q4, my main goals are to find out how I can keep coming up with funny ideas quickly. That probably means branching out and having a few comics that don't deal with aliens, which I'm okay with. The great thing about humor is that it's so versatile. Any idea can lead itself to a joke with enough time and care.
